About Us
In 1968 Carl Stulz and S. J. Standberry (the two S’s) started S & S Chemical and Oil, inc in Riverton, WY. In the early 70s it was the largest Dowell Chemicals distributor of calcium chloride in the US, and they were a jobber for Sinclair wholesaling gasoline and diesel in the Riverton area. Carl was very instrumental in setting up the Riverton County Club and their Saltwater Pro-Am golf tournament in the 70s and is credited with the first hole-in-one recorded there. His company mascot is on each hole sign--if you have golfed there, I’m sure you know what I’m talking about.

In 1983 Lynn Leininger joined Prairie Industrial Chemicals in Denver, Colorado to market potassium chloride, hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, calcium hypochlorite, sodium hypochlorite, and drilling fluid additives into the various water treatment, gold mining, power plants, and oilfield customers in the Midwest and Rocky Mountain areas of the United States.

In 1985 Lynn was named President of Prairie Industrial Chemicals USA, and by 1990 Prairie Industrial Chemicals USA was a fully functioning and growing business in need of adding to their operational base. In 1991 Jim Yuel (PrairChem, Inc.) and Lynn Leininger purchased S & S Chemical and Oil, Inc. with operation in Baggs, Wamsutter, Big Piney, and Riverton, Wy. Operations of Prairie Industrial Chemicals were rolled into S & S at that time and the corporate office was relocated from Riverton, WY to Williston, ND.

In 1992 S & S Chemical and Oil, Inc. bought its first 5 tractor trailers and started to offer trucking services for delivery of bulk and bagged drilling salt and drilling mud into the Williston Basin. In 1996, after several years of instability in oil prices and slower drilling activities throughout the Rockies, S & S had to make the tough decision to close their offices in all locations except for Williston, ND. Later in the same year, Lynn purchased the remaining stock from PrairChem and became 100% owner of the business that he had helped to build.

Lynn’s son Ryan rejoined him to help manage the business in 1999 after a brief hiatus from the company to attend college. Things were quiet for a couple years for S & S, as they were for everyone in the oil business. 1999 brought record breaking low oil prices and they knew it had to get better from there……and it did! Later in 1999 S & S made a move into the frac sand business as a supplier by becoming an authorized UNIFRAC distributor and designating a large storage facility for the product. S & S also purchased its first pieces of rental equipment in this year. The addition of these new lines of business coupled with the sand and cement hauling and wholesale chemicals that were the company’s mainstay through the downturn in the oil industry proved to be a great combination.

In 2001 S & S Chemical and Oil changed its name to S & S Sales, Inc. after the tragic events of 9/11. With the increased sensitivity to hazardous materials and the increased security from the government, the company and their insurance carriers felt that having “chemical and oil” in the name brought on undeserved attention. Many people worried that a company labeled with chemical and/or oil would be at an increased risk for terrorism and the words should be dropped for added security.

Over the past 8 years S & S Sales, Inc. has grown its fleet of trucks from 5 units to 55 units and has moved strongly into the rental equipment market with the addition of 400 bbls tanks, pre-mix tanks, skid mounted vac units, and 500 bbls frac tanks. In November of 2006 construction was completed on the new state-of-the-art 6,500 ton sand storage and trans-loading facility in Williston. In early 2007 expansion of this same plant began. This expansion phase will more than double the silo storage capacity to 7,800 tons bringing our total storage capabilities (on and off rail) to over 12,000 tons.

Today S & S Sales, Inc. is proud to be providing good paying jobs to 65+ employees in the Williston area. Our philosophy of “never say no” has served us well. We take great pride in the relationships that we have built with our customers and our employees, and we are still dedicated to a “culture of excellence” in service that we provide in the Williston Basin.
